Becoming a BLS & Heartsaver instructor is a three-step process.

Step 1: Complete the Core Instructor Course.

This is a self-directed course which can be completed online with the use of a workbook. It takes about 6 to 8 hours and must be completed before attending the Instructor Course. Please note that the cost of this book is not included in the price of the course. The text may be purchased from the training center and shipped to you.

Step 2: Attend the Instructor Course

This Instructor Course is for those who wish to teach the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) and Heartsaver CPR, AED and First Aid Courses. This course will provide the Instructor Candidate with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully deliver the provider courses. Upon successful completion of this course and associated monitoring sessions, the Instructor Candidate will obtain an AHA BLS and Heartsaver instructor card. Instructor Candidates will be able to teach these courses using the video and lesson maps.

All materials included in the cost of the course are:

  1. BLS Provider Manual
  2. BLS Instructor Manual
  3. Heartsaver Instructor Manual
  4. Heartsaver First Aid w/CPR & AED Provider Manual
  5. Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid Provider Manual

These materials will be distributed at the beginning of the course.

Instructor candidates should be clear on the AHA guidelines for BLS. All potential candidates will be required to complete a written provider test and skills verification session at the beginning of this course. Participants will have one chance to successfully complete the tests. Failure to complete this portion will disqualify the potential candidate from continuing in the process.

Step 3: Align with an AHA Training Center for Monitoring/Mentoring.

Once the Instructor Course has been successfully completed, a minimum of two monitoring sessions will be required for all candidates. This will give the candidate time to acclimate to the way a course is run and the practices necessary to be an assistant instructor. Once this process is completed successfully, the instructor will be issued an instructor card.

You MUST bring a copy of the “Core Instructor Course Completion Certificate” and a current BLS provider card to the course. Without these, you will not be admitted to the course.
